Tannishtha Chatterjee earned international acclaim when her first film, Brick Lane, released two years ago. The film, also starring Satish Kaushik, also earned a BAFTA nomination.
Tannishtha, who seemed to disappear from the film scene for a while, is now back with Barah Aana, starring Naseeruddin Shah and Vijay Raaz. The young actress spoke to Patcy N about sharing screen space with such talented actors.
Where have you been since Brick Lane released?
After Brick lane, I did five films -- Bombay Summer with iDreams Productions, White Elephant by NFDC and NDTV, Barah Aana and a film on the Bhopal: Prayer For Rain gas tragedy called Bhopal. That stars Martin Sheen, Kal Penn and Rajpal Yadav. Then, there's a yet-untitled road film. It is a fantasy film, directed by Dev Benegal, and starring Abhay Deol and Satish Kaushik.
Were you in touch with Satish Kaushik after Brick Lane?
No. He makes very different kind of movies. But we're working together in Dev Benegal's film.
Do you think Brick Lane opened doors for you?
Yes and no. It didn't release in India, so it opened doors abroad, not here. Most of the films I'm doing are international movies, but shot in India.
You're a Bengali. Do you plan on doing Bengali movies?
I did Bibar a long time ago, and even won the best actress award. Recently, I was offered Buddadeb Dasgupta's film but I had already given my dates to Dev Benegal. So I lost on it.
