Meet the men behind the Bat-suit

Superman flies. Spiderman crawls on buildings and ceilings. The Hulk is a muscle-packed green monster.

But what exactly does Batman do? Sure, he has high IQ, the high-tech gear and a lot of money, but what are his superhero powers? Just what makes him a superhero?

Over the past few years, Bruce Wayne and his alter ego have presented unique challenges to filmmakers and actors trying to recreate the superhero story.

Through five incarnations, we have seen Batman at his best and at his worst. We take a look at those who have tried their hand at playing Batman.

Adam West

Though today's Batman sports an Adonis-type body and a gritty attitude, his first manifestation was different. Draped in a costume that would not work on Halloween, Batman's Caped Crusader became a mega-hit in the 1960's -- first in the popular Batman television serial and later in a 1966 movie spin-off, Batman.

The film saw a familiar cast of super-villains like the Joker, Penguin, Riddler and Catwoman, as they attempted to take over the world only to be stopped by the dynamic duo of Batman and Robin. The film also featured over-sized bombs, dehydration ray guns and plenty of POWS and KABOOMS. Throughout the series and the film, Batman was no more than an archetypal hero, and there have been few attempts to explain his psychology or his past.

While future films would portray the murkiness of Gotham City and Batman as a dark superhero, who is forever pained by the loss of his parents, Adam West's Batman was simply a groovy kind of a guy.
