1. Goodfellas (1990)

Director: Martin Scorsese
Starring: Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, Joe Pesci, Lorraine Bracco

There are reasons for rating Marty's finest film over The Godfather. Basically, as a mobster movie, it is quite simply better.

Also, while Coppola stayed so loyal to Puzo's novel that readers watching the film almost had deja vu, feverish originality crackled through Goodfellas.

Occasionally referred to as The Godfather for the 1990s, Scorsese's masterpiece is a towering achievement, based on the true stories of a gangster.

The film chronicles the story of Henry Hill, a young boy fascinated with the idea of being a gangster. His obsession with the mafia spurs him on, and he does eventually succeed. If that's the word.

Ray Liotta (right in the picture) hands in a superb performance, as does the one and only Robert De Niro, but the spotlight here belongs to Joe Pesci (left) and his unbelievable acting job.

Not to mention one of the finest long tracking shots ever seen in cinema.

As essential as viewing can be.

Quote:

Henry Hill: "For a second I thought I was dead. But, when I heard all the noise, I knew they were cops. Only cops talk that way. If they'd been wiseguys, I wouldn't have heard a thing.

"I would've been dead."
