Ever since Bob Kane revitalised DC Comics with its dark and brooding superstar, the world has been begging for a Batman film.

Hollywood, as always, has obliged, only too gladly. But not always with the finest results.

After four disjointed, diametrically opposed versions of big-budget Batman, the time has come again for reinvention. And a return to bat-roots.

Here, with the exception of the black and white (and flabby) Robert Lowery version (1949, I kid you not), are the five not-so-gentle men who have brought the caped crusader alive on screen.
