Golmaal, 1979

In Hrishikesh Mukherjee's utterly adorable Golmaal, we have a football-loving unemployed youngster - Ramprasad Dashrathprasad Sharma (Amol Palekar) up against Bhavani Shankar's (Utpal Dutt) traditional beliefs about everything personal, professional and physical.

An unsuspecting moustache comes to his rescue. He gets the job. But when he's caught without one, he promptly invents a fictional twin - Lakshmanprasad Dashrathprasad Sharma.

Needless to say, the premise is loaded with rib tickling possibilities.

And so you laugh uncontrollably through a hilarious match of wits between the eccentric Bhavani and clever Ram/Lakshman. What makes Golmaal so genuine is that it doesn't rely on silly gags or lame slapstick to keep the joke moving, instead it looks up to Utpal Dutt's wide-eyed freakishness and Amol Palekar's bumbling antics for inspiration.

As always, R D Burman pitches in to season this scrumptious comedy with a sprinkling of his genius, namely Golmaal hai, Aanewala pal, Ek baat kahoon and Sapne mein dekha sapna.
