'Even today, after making so many Tamil films, Mani Ratnam is seen as an outsider'

Many actors say that theatre brings out the best in them...

I disagree. Yes, stage is an actor's medium but while performing on stage, you have a direct connection with the audience, and that is completely different dynamics as opposed to performing in cinema.

He is not living by the consensus of the audience when he is performing for a director which I feel is much more challenging for an actor.

Why do you think Tamil filmmakers refuse to look at you beyond the image of the US returned Mappilai?

When Mani Sir gave me that image, everybody else followed from there! Maybe because I am a little educated! They also say that I look rich but my bank statements prove otherwise!

I remember Nasser telling me that after Nayagan, for three years, he didn't have to remove the Inspector's uniform!

I think they still look at me as an outsider and alien to Tamil cinema existence. Even today, after making so many Tamil films, Mani Ratnam is seen as an outsider. Maybe the fact that I belong to the Indian English theatre is responsible for this feeling.
