The melancholy of a discontent heart is magnificently articulated in the glossy and syrupy, yet at the same time, meaningful and poignant play of Asha's amazingly adaptive voice. And that's what makes Khali haath shaam so brilliantly effective in my eyes (or ears, whatever!).
