Elvis Presley's first film, Love Me tender, opened on November 15, 1956 in New York. It has cost $1 million to make -- an amount the producers recovered in just three days! It explains why, over the next three decades, Elvis would make his presence felt in 33 movies.
Starting out with an amateur recording made for his mother's birthday in 1954, Elvis rose to become one of the most iconic musicians of his time. By the time audiences saw him on television in 1956, all his singles were going gold. He married Priscilla Beaulieu a year later, with whom he had daughter Lisa Marie before a divorce in 1973.
Presley's last live performance was on June 25, 1977. He died six weeks later on August 16, 1977, of congestive heart failure brought on by suspected drug abuse. Nine years later, he was one of the first 10 people inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
