The Best Films of the 90s

I had foolishly imagined the 90s to be a relatively easier decade, but such was not the case. Much has been inevitably overlooked in this list.

The nineties were a time when we were presented both our coolest protagonists -- Jeff Bridges' Dude in The Big Lebowski -- and our most diabolical villains -- Anthony Hopkins' Hannibal Lecter in The Silence Of The Lambs.

Reality television was foreshadowed in Peter Weir's haunting The Truman Show, while Robert Redford took on a real-life scandal in Quiz Show. All this while Clint Eastwood continued to draw the pistol in Unforgiven and Warren Beatty continued to play a gangster in Bugsy.

Bryan Singer tossed us a wrong 'un in The Usual Suspects, while Shakespeare In Love and Four Weddings And A Funeral cleverly revitalised the flagging romantic-comedy genre.

Spielberg explored the Holocaust in Schindler's List, while buddy Robert Zemeckis journeyed through Americana with Forrest Gump.

Mel Gibson did William Wallace in Braveheart, and Oliver Stone did Kennedy in JFK.

Truly an unpredictable decade. Let me know which of the ten I posted -- and these exceptions all sharing the eleventh spot -- you agree with, and mail me your ideal list at senterfold@rediffmail.com.

All I now know is that there are no easy decades. Next week, in the final installment of this longrunning special, we'll take a look at the movies of the day: from the year 2000 to next week itself. Cheers.
