Mahanadhi (1994)
Directed by Santhana Bharathi, Mahanadhi (Great River), the 1994 movie saw Haasan re-enter the world of serious movies which went on to win a National award for best feature film in Tamil.
Here he played a rather gullible, yet dignified man of humble beginnings, who later becomes the victim of a chit-fund fraud. Haasan managed to evoke sympathy and struck a chord with his sensitive portrayals. His altercations with his jailers are scenes to watch out for.
The movie also showcased the plight of child sex workers in Kolkata's red light area, but mostly, at its base, was the tribulation faced by an ordinary man, who somehow grapples with it and succeeds in winning back his old life. You cannot watch this film without being misty eyed.
