An unlucky romantic

Moving closer to home, Sanjeev Kumar was born -- his real name was Harihar Jariwala -- to a poor Gujarati family on July 9, 1938.

Like a million others, he decided to study acting at a film school, then managed to made the move to Bollywood with Hum Hindustani in 1960.

He is probably best-remembered for his parts in Sholay (1975), Trishul (1978) and the nine different roles he essayed simultaneously in Naya Din Nayi Raat (1974).

Interestingly, Sanjeev Kumar was always unlucky when it came to love. First came his failure to win the heart of Hema Malini, whom he lost to Dharmendra. Then, he allegedly proposed to Leena Chandavarkar, who married Kishore Kumar instead.

He died a bachelor at 47.
