'I had to be very careful about Jodha and Akbar'

Another big challenge was dealing with historical characters.

"In the case of Bhuvan and Gauri (Aamir Khan and Gracy Singh's characters in Lagaan) and Mohan Bhargav and Gita (Shah Rukh Khan and Gayatri Joshi's characters in Swades), I had complete freedom," the filmmaker says. "I could make those characters do whatever I liked. But in the case of Jodha and Akbar, I had to very careful."

Thirty percent of the film is pure history, says Gowarikar, adding that it took him more time to research and work on creating authentic costumes and settings than shoot the film, which took up about nine months.

"The characters are grounded in history," he continues. "But the rest of the 70 percent is the extension of that history. I had to create believable situations in creating this love story."
