Considered to be one of the great early Sci-fi films, 1953's War of the Worlds is a tour de force of the genre. The story kicks off when what is believed to be a meteorite crashes to Earth in Southern California. But it soon becomes evident that it was no meteorite -- it was a Martian spacecraft!
Soon the full-scale Martian assault begins, as the wage war on Earth and her peoples. Humans, outgunned and demoralized, flee from the encroaching Martian armies.
But, just when all seems lost, the aliens begin to die suddenly. As it turns out, though they cannot be harmed by Earth's weapons, they have no answer for her bacteria and viruses. Score one for the germs!
