Paheli (2005)
Produced by Shah Rukh Khan and directed by Amol Palekar, the film faced severe criticism after it was sent as India's official entry.
There was criticism from all sides about Shah Rukh's acting ability, the tragic omission of films like Hazaaron Khwaaishein Aisi, Iqbal and Black. Other films considered for the nomination were Mangal Pandey, Veer-Zaara, Swades, Parineeta, Page 3, Sachein (Tamil), Anniyan (Tamil), Uttarayan (Marathi), Achuvante Anna (Malayalam), Graham (Telugu), and Kadal (Tamil).
A debate on whether Black should have been sent instead, raged.
Vinod Pande, acting chairman, Film Federation of India, then told rediff.com, 'We are sure Paheli is the right choice.'
