'I loved Black Friday but No Smoking is better'

Anurag Kashyap is a genius," John says, praising his director. "He can change the texture of the scene by just changing your movements or just a word in the dialogue! A film like this is very difficult to execute because the screenplay is very complicated. But you have to make it simple for the audience. And he has done a brilliant job."

John also praises the director for giving him freedom on the sets. "Most of what you see in the film is what I would have done in those circumstances. But if I overdid it, Anurag would tell me, 'Character ko thoda kum karna, kyunki iss point pe itna upar nahi jaa sakta, iss ko aur thoda neeche lana padega.'"

Though Anurag gave him a bound script, John says there was so much improvisation on the sets that they worked actually without a script.

"After working with Anurag, it is very difficult to work with a director, who would say, storyboard mein mera shot yeh hai aur iske hisaab se he humlog jayenge. I am not saying this because I have done No Smoking with him. You would say this too if you have seen his Black Friday and Paanch," he says.

Ironically, John saw Black Friday only after he finished shooting for No Smoking. "I loved Black Friday but No Smoking is better," John laughs.
