Another K Balachander film for Rajni, and the character he was to play was that of a directionless lout who falls in love with a prostitute and start living in with her, before heeding to societal constraints and criticism to go their own ways. No sane man with the ambitions of going to the very top of the Tamil industry would have taken up that role. Rajni did.

Balachander's intelligent direction and Rajni's casual brilliance were much appreciated by critics and fans.

A philosophical song from this movie -- Ennada Pollatha Vaazhkai -- became a rage with viewers from all walks of life. This probably was the first instance when what Rajni says on screen became gospel for the fans, though in this case the thoughts were that of the director.
