Sir Elton, Elton Hercules John to give his full name, opened the concert against a giant photo portrait of the princess with Your Song.
...I know it's not much but it's the best I can do
My gift is my song and this one's for you
And you can tell everybody this is your song
It may be quite simple but now that it's done
I hope you don't mind
I hope you don't mind that I put down in words
How wonderful life is while you're in the world
Five-time-Grammy winner John, who has sold more than 250 million albums of his music worldwide, first released Your Song in 1970 as part of his album Elton John. It hit the US Top Ten.
The British singer's rendition of Candle in the Wind, specially composed for
Princess Diana's funeral, became the fastest selling single of all times, chalking 55 million pounds for a memorial fund in honour of the princess. It sold 30 million copies worldwide and won him a Grammy.
He performed it for the second time at the memorial concert on July 1.
