Arabikkatha focussed on an important phase in the life of a staunch leftist, Cuba Mukundan (Sreenivasan), who lives in a village called Chemmannoor.

The film succeeded in winning the appreciation of both the critics and the masses. It seemed apt for Malayalam cinema, as Malayalam cinema is known for films which are neither too commercial nor too offbeat.
