I am happy that Sanjay Gupta saw the potential in me and let me direct a movie. He would always tell me that whenever I listen to any script, I give my views from the director's point of view. It was always there in my mind that I was not in the movie from start to end, because as an actor I would join halfway through and leave halfway through. But as a director, I would be involved in pre-production and post-production. So I always wanted to direct.

And in your very first movie itself, if you get actors like Naseeruddin Shah and Shabhana Azmi, you can't ask for more. These are the actors who enhance your work; they help you if you are stuck. But I went fully prepared, as I knew I was dealing with the best actors of Indian cinema.
