Water (2007)
The maker: Deepa Mehta
The man playing Gandhi: Mohan Jhangiani
Mahatma Gandhi was committed to the cause of social reforms and spoke out against the inhuman treatment of young widows in early 20th century India.
Set in the late 1930s, Deepa Mehta's Oscar-nominated Water used this point as a subtext for its storyline.
Though Gandhi makes a fleeting appearance, his thoughts are echoed through one of the film's key protagonists, Narayan (John Abraham), shown to be Gandhian in soul and deed.
