The best of Rakesh Roshan

5. Aakhir Kyon (1985)

rakesh Roshan's father-in-law J Om Prakash, known for making films that began with the letter 'A,' had cast Rakesh in his ventures like Aankhon Aankhon Mein and Akraman earlier but their most memorable collaboration came about in their last film together, Aakhir Kyon.

At the time of its release, Aakhir Kyon raised some pertinent questions, thereby pushing the envelope in the moribund cinematic creativity of the '80s. Rakesh played a publisher who marries Smita Patil and has a daughter by her. However, when her cousin sister Tina Munim gives him the glad eye, during the Holi song (Saat rang mein khel rahi hai dilwalon ki holi re), he succumbs to her comely charms. Rakesh and Tina get married and Smita goes on to become a famous novelist. Years later, life comes a full circle and fate brings Rakesh at Smita's mercy.

Rakesh presented a convincing study of guilt as a man struggling to reconcile forbidden pleasures with his sense of self.
