'I wanted to be a big part of the scripting process of Krrish'

Hrithik Roshan in an exclusive interview to rediff.com

A week after Krrish releases, Superman Returns will hit screens in India and worldwide. Is there any fear of having the icon of superheroes as competition?

There is absolutely no fear and no need to fear. There are only two things that can happen. Both are positive. In one scenario we may be motivated to do greater special effects for our next film and get to learn something from Superman. It may point out our mistakes and follies.

On the other hand it (Krrish) may match up and do better and it will be an acknowledgment of our hard work. It will make us feel victorious and be a matter of exhilaration.

In both ways there is something positive to come out of it. That's how I see life. There's something positive you can get out of every single aspect of life.

You haven't had any release since Lakshya in 2004. Was it because you knew Krrish would take all of your time and there were no other exciting scripts?

It was a combination of things. I had not made up my mind that I would not do any film. I was still reading scripts and waiting for anything exciting to come along to even give up sitting on the script for Krrish, but nothing came up that was exciting enough.

I also wanted to be a big part of the scripting process of Krrish because it was a genre where I knew my sensibilities as a part of my generation would be of immense value to the script because it was a film that would cater to people my age.

It is my generation that has grown up watching Superman, Batman, Spiderman, so I was very concerned that it should be something that would cater to a man of my sensibilities so I made myself a very consistent part of the scripting process.

It took an entire year for the script because we had no reference point. We did not want to base it on the lines of the clichéd superhero flick with the dual personality -- Superman-Clark Kent. We didn't want to do anything that had been seen, we wanted to take new roads and came across a lot of barriers.

I have not decided that I will do only one or two films in a year. I can do 8 films in a year if I can give my full time to each film and have them completed in time so that I can do justice to each and every one of them. If one film takes 40 days, I can do 15 films but I would like to do them one at a time.

A lot of films with young, first time directors?

Yes, more of those actually because there are only about five or six great directors and they don't make films very often. So it's more the young generation and this fresher lot is coming out with some incredible stories.
