Gunning for the Globes

The Constant Gardener
Nominee: Best Motion Picture - Drama

Big, big names. Based on a John le Carré novel, this is a film by Fernando Meirelles -- the man who made the revolutionary City Of God.

Starring Rachel Weisz and Ralph Fiennes, Constant Gardener is an intricately plotted drama revolving around a widower digging to unearth the truth about his wife's murder.

The reviews: Gardener has elicited praise from the biggest names. A O Scott of the The New York Times says, 'Fernando Meirelles's excellent adaptation of the novel by John le Carré is likely to linger in your mind and may even trouble your conscience.'

America's most popular reviewer Roger Ebert, writing in The Chicago Sun-Times, simply calls it 'one of the year's best films.'

Other publications haven't been as positive. 'Noble intentions and some lovely performances... too bad the director keeps getting in their way,' writes Sean Burns in the Philadelphia Weekly. Victoria Alexander agrees, writing 'Fiennes cries (again) playing a boob diplomat, with a wife who is jeopardising his career and her life. You won't care.'

What is likely: The film got mixed reviews, but the buzz hasn't really stayed with it. An unlikely nominee, but one that is capable of springing a surprise and actually picking up Best Film -- if only because they're afraid to give it to Brokeback Mountain!
