What makes Yash Chopra tick

August 31, 2006
Yash Chopra has only one love: movies. But his son Aditya is even more 'obsessed' with films than Chopra.

"Aditya is a complete filmmaker. He's a great story writer," Chopra says proudly. "When he conceives a film, he does it from start to finish. He writes the story, screenplay, dialogues, edits the films, makes his own music, thinks how to market his film, thinks about his posters... that's why he can't make too many films."

And then Chopra lets out his trade secret. "To be a fantastic director, one has to have a great scriptwriter. I work with writers; I'm not one myself. Aditya doesn't need anyone. He doesn't want anyone. He works alone."

Aditya Chopra, unlike his best friend Karan Johar, never gives interviews, never poses for the camera and always avoids public appearances.

But Chopra claims he's not media shy. "He doesn't meet anyone. He doesn't go to parties, or any occasion. He has very few friends, and they socialise at each other's houses. Karan Johar and he are poles apart. But Karan will not do anything without asking Adi. Adi is the first person to watch Karan's films. Both of them will watch it alone. No one else is allowed inside."

He continues, "Besides, he's running this studio, he's in charge of Yash Raj, he makes so many movies a year, how can he be shy? He just doesn't believe in meeting people."

And then he gives us some good news: Aditya will start on his next film by the end of this year or early next year. His last directorial movie, Mohabbatein, released in 2000.

"Nowadays, my son doesn't follow my footsteps. I follow his. There's a quote that says, ‘Child is the father of man’," Chopra signs off.
