Ghare Baire (The Home And The World). Ray sketches designs for Bimala's saris in his kheror khata (rough copy that he used for sketches and scribbles), at home, 1982

The dress is very significant in this film, because of it being set during the Swadeshi Movement. At the beginning of the film, Bimala wears mainly bideshi (foreign-loomed) cloth; later, under the influence of the nationalist Sandip, she switches to swadeshi (Indian-loomed) cloth.

This film was the first in Ray's oeuvre to show a full-blooded kiss -- a fact that provoked speculation about whether it would get past the censors.
