Are you afraid of the huge expectations from this film?

It is like a sword hanging over you. I am happy because people wait expectedly for my films. On the other hand, I don't know what they are thinking of. If a film is well made, people are lost in those three hours of watching the film.

People watched Lagaan without expectations and they got lost in the film even though it lasted for three hours and 42 minutes. We have worked very hard on Mangal Pandey and we hope people will like it.

Do you think people will empathise with Mangal Pandey like they did for Bhuvan, your character in Lagaan?

We have tried to attempt that. I always keep in mind when I do a film. People have to be involved with the characters because only then will they enjoy the film.

Another important aspect of Mangal Pandey is that it is being told through a friendship. The story is about Toby Stephens (Editor's note: Toby, seen above with Aamir, played the villain in the James Bond film Die Another Day) and me.

Toby is a gem of a guy and so thorough in his work. Indian audiences will enjoy watching him. He is a highly trained actor from British theatre (Editor's note: He is the son of the legendary actress Dame Maggie Smith).
