Aishwarya Rai is not in the country these days, but scarcely a day goes by when she is not written about.
Whether it's speculation of her shifting base to London, another new international film project or her appearance at the Cannes film festival this month, Bollywood's reigning Queen imperially rules over India cinema -- from within or without.
In an interesting conversation with Senior Associate Editor Archana Masih, she spoke about her present run in Bollywood, her experiences on the sets of Gurinder Chadha's Bride and Prejudice -- her first English film -- and her promising filmi adventure on foreign shores.
You were the first actor to have a big agent in Hollywood, how has it worked so far?
(Laughs) I am not the first one to have an agent in the West, a lot of them have agents already. I don't know big or small, I think that's very, very subjective relative to whatever your barometer of comparison be, but definitely not the first to have an agent or the first to have worked in an English film. A lot of my seniors have done so before.

It's not that I was going in search of any career beyond the boundaries of what my country had to offer but it actually worked the other way around.
Ever since I went to the Cannes festival, the media overseas really encouraged me to consider the possibilities of working in the West. Then I got a call from some people who worked in the business in America, who asked me to first obviously get an agent so that they could have direct access because that's the way they work. So a year-and-a-half ago, I went to the States and met agents from three agencies, zeroed in on William Morris. It was that brief a visit, that was all I could manage but it actually snowballed. I met up with Harvey Weinstein from Miramax that trip itself and a couple of other meetings and it was really interesting that barely six months later I was signed up by Gurinder Chadha to work in Bride and Prejudice which eventually Miramax was backing.
