The First Scene: Effective?

Who can forget the haunting opening sequence of Guru Dutt’s collosus?

The film begins with Bhootnath (Guru Dutt), a middle-aged architect, excavating amidst the ruins of an old haveli. An eerie sense of déjà vu sets him reminiscing.

To add to the magic, the haunting strains of Koi door se aawaz de... chale aao, fill the air. Bhootnath is transported by nostalgia, and you yearn for him to recall the story.

In the small screen version, the opening is spare. Since Bhootnath is only informed about his job of visiting the haveli he once inhabited -– without actually showing him working on the site -– the impact of the flashback is considerably diluted and you realise that the combined talents of Dutt and Alvi were instrumental in creating the right lead in for the story to be told in flashback.
