Dweepa

For director Girish Kasaravally's Thayir Sayiba, I used ethnic Indian music. Although Dweepa was set in a tribal village in Karnataka, Girish wanted me to compose music with grandeur. So it was long, hummable melodies throughout the film, but with western orchestration. This gave grandeur to the location; the forest, the mountain ranges, lakes, floods, etc. Everything in the film was on a grand scale, and it became a tribute to nature itself.

The flood entering the village is an important element in the film where I used a haunting melody with alternating sounds and silences. With rhythmic use of solo and symphony, I tried to create drama.

Soundarya had told me about her visits to several international film festivals with Dweepa. Everywhere, she had the audience asking her for the audio CD of the background score. I felt so happy hearing this!
