To recreate pre-Partition India, art director and costume designer Muneesh Sappel constructed a number of sets in Amritsar, in small towns near Lahore, Sriganganagar in Rajasthan, Nalagarh in Shekhawati and in Mumbai's Film City, employing around 400 workers.
Sappel pored over books, spoke to people who witnessed the black period, and even collected props from actual locations in Punjab.
Matchboxes, buses, bus tickets, jeeps, cigarettes all bear the 1940s look.
