Pinjar is the screen adaptation of celebrated author and poetess Amrita Pritam's novel of the same name, which means skeleton.

Her books are mostly centred on women. Recipient of the Sahitya Kala Akademi, Padma Shri and Jnanpith Awards, 94 year-old Pritam now resides in Delhi.

Pritam's novel, Kadambari, was earlier made into a film with Shabana Azmi in the lead role.
