'Khalnayak': Inside a criminal's mind!

Subhash Ghai's Khalnayak is one of the best films that released in 1993 -- a year that also saw the release of films like Baazigar, Darr, Aankhen, Damini and Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke.Khalnayak, however, stands out for several reasons.

First, it dealt with terrorism, which, at that time, was a relatively new theme for Bollywood.
Though Mani Ratnam's Roja released around the same time and discussed the same issue, it handled the topic in a more realistic manner.
Khalnayak, on the other hand, is the story of a young man, Ballu Balram, and how he enters the world of crime and eventually becomes a hardcore 'terrorist'.
His actions are attributed to issues like unemployment and to how his father had to suffer because he was an honest man. These issues affect Ballu's psyche. His character is well-defined and Sanjay Dutt, who was signed for the role, played it perfectly.
Ghai's mastery is hard to miss.
Some scenes are unforgettable:
* Ram (Jackie Shroff) chasing Ballu in the jungles.
* Ganga (Madhuri Dixit) listening to Ballu's story inside a hut.
