Anantaram (1987) Ashokan plays the quintessential introspective youth; quiet, self-contained, seemingly dull, yet possessed of superior intellect and sharp wit. His birth is shrouded in stigma, his life is spent as a misfit in the society he is part of. Unable to belong, a part of society yet apart, he drifts from melancholy to despondency to borderline schizophrenia. His story is then played out in two dimensions and multiple perspectives -- the real dimension, and the one he inhabits in his mind. The real fades, the imagined assumes greater importance and, slowly, creates a recipe for chaos. Starring: Ashokan, Mammootty, Shobhana and others
