Fascinated by the horror film genre Ram Gopal Varma earlier tried his luck with Raat (Revathi, Chinna, Om Puri) and Deyyam (J D Chakravarthy, Jayasudha, Maheshwari).

While the earlier two were low budget failures, Bhoot has been mounted on a lavish scale with a budget of Rs 80 million. It stars Rekha, Ajay Devgan, Urmila Matondkar, Nana Patekar, Victor Banerjee, Tanuja, Seema Biswas and Fardeen Khan.

Bhoot, according to Varma, has, 'no scary monsters, no green liquid spewing from crazed mouths, no creaky doors and foggy nights. The fear is generated completely from within.'
