HOME | MOVIES Thirteen nominations for one film is pretty impressive, by any standard. Peter Jackson's The Lord Of The Rings is just one short of James Cameron's Titanic, which had 14 nominations. Not to be left behind are Ron Howard's A Beautiful Mind and Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge, with eight nominations each. Todd Field's tense drama In The Bedroom and the star-studded Robert Altman's Gosford Park boast of seven and five nominations each. A glance at the Best Picture nominations:

Moulin Rouge Plot: A musical love story set against the colourful and vibrant backdrop of the nightclub in France called Moulin Rouge. A penniless writer falls in love with Moulin Rouge's prized courtesan Satine. Their romance is no bed of roses, for Satine is already committed to entice the wealthy Duke of Monroth. Trivia: During one of dance routines, the leading actress of Moulin Rouge, Nicole Kidman hurt her knee and fractured her ribs. Since the film was being shot on a tight schedule, director Baz Luhrmann had to take Kidman's closeups, while she was still seated on a wheelchair.

A Beautiful Mind Plot: A true life story based on the book by Sylvia Nasar with the same name, A Beautiful Mind tells the story of a gifted mathematician John Forbes Nash Jr. His flourishing career is in jeopardy when he suffers from bouts of schizophrenia. How he overcomes the diseases, discovers love and goes on to win the Noble Prize forms the rest of the plot. Trivia: Apparently, Russell Crowe wasn't the original choice for the part of a paranoid genius. Tom Cruise was first approached for the role. But he declined as he was busy with prior commitments. Cruise's loss turned out to be Crowe's gain.

Gosford Park: Plot: Set in the early 1930s, Gosford Park is about the high profile McCordle family. The McCordles throw a party and invite all their friends and relatives. The film takes a tongue-in-cheek look at the rich, upper class guests and the lower strata of servants. But there's more than meets the eye. A murder takes place in the household. Partly humorous and partly mysterious, that's Gosford Park for you. Trivia: For authenticity's sake, Gosford Park is set in an English country house and filmed entirely in England. Bob Balaban and Ryan Philippe were the only two Americans in this all-British cast.

In The Bedroom Plot: Life takes a tragic turn for a middle-aged couple when their only son is murdered by his girlfriend's jealous ex-husband. How the couple deal with this tragedy forms the crux of the plot. Trivia: In The Bedroom is the only low-budgeted film to have been pitted against lavish, multi-million-dollar projects like Moulin Rouge and The Lord Of The Rings in the Best Picture category.
