Peter Jackson [The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring] Hot seat: Kiwi Peter Jackson's hard work and perseverance paid off, what with The Lord Of The Rings garnering 13 nominations. The filmmaker took a huge risk, shooting for a record 16 months non-stop, bringing J R R Tolkien's trilogy to life. It paid off, as the film won critical as well as popular acclaim. Ridley Scott [Black Hawk Down] Hot seat: Ridley Scott's Roman epic drama, Gladiator wooed the Academy in 2001. The Russell Crowe starrer notched 12 nominations and won five. Unfortunately for him, Steven Soderbergh won Best Director for Erin Brocovich. This time around, Ridley Scott has been nominated for his visually captivating war film-Black Hawk Down. Ron Howard [A Beautiful Mind] Hot seat: He is the man responsible for impressive films like Apollo 13, Edtv, Ransom. With A Beautiful Mind, director Ron Howard receives his first Oscar nomination. Though the film got some flak for an incomplete depiction of Noble Prize winner John Forbes Nash Jr's (A Beautiful Mind is based on him) life, Howard's chances seem good. Earlier nominations: None.

David Lynch [Mulholland Drive] Hot seat: The director of critically acclaimed films like The Elephant Man is back with another impressive work, Mulholland Drive. Initially made as a pilot for television, Mulholland Drive was subsequently developed into a full-fledged film. The plot is a mystifying tableau of subplots like a woman dealing with amnesia, a wannabe actress and a filmmaker being pressurised to cast a specific actress.
