Hu Tu Tu was Gulzar's second attempt at unveiling the going-ons in politics and terrorism after Maachis. The film raised a few eyebrows when Sunil was cast opposite the likes of Nana Patekar, Tabu and Suhasini Mulay.

However, his earnest performance as the misled young man was well received. Keeping with his serious actor look, he even sported a moustache for the film.
