Late buying helps Sensex end flat

The Bombay Stock ExchangeThe Sensex on Tuesday opened at 17,063 but soon slipped into the negative zone tracking weak global cues.

The index moved sideways and exhibited lacklustre movement for most part of the trading session. The index touched a low of 16,883. However, fresh buying in the last hour of the trading session helped the index rebound into the positive zone.

The Sensex finally ended flat at 17,050, up 18 points. The NSE Nifty ended at 5,062, up four points.

Among the sectoral indices, IT index put up a good performance, and was up 2% at 4,826. On the other hand sectors like realty and oil & gas displayed weakness.

The market breadth was marginally negative, out of 2,808 shares traded, 1,394 declined and 1,324 advanced today on the BSE.

INDEX MOVERS. . .

TCS [Get Quote] topped the list of gainers, advanced 3.5% to Rs 690 and Hero Honda was up 2.55 at Rs 1,679, respectively.

Infosys [Get Quote], Reliance Infrastructure and HDFC Bank [Get Quote] were the other prominent gainers, up 1-2% each.

. . .AND THE SHAKERS

ONGC [Get Quote] and ACC were the major losers, down 2% each at Rs 1,172 and Rs 729, respectively.

DLF, Bharti Airtel [Get Quote], Reliance Communications [Get Quote], Sun Pharma [Get Quote], Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata Motors [Get Quote] were down 1-2% each.

VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERS

Reliance Capital [Get Quote] topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs 304.79. It was followed by Reliance (Rs 186.48 crore), DLF (Rs 127.61 crore), Mahindra Satyam [Get Quote] (Rs 119.95 crore) and SBI [Get Quote] (Rs 110.06 crore).

Suzlon [Get Quote] led the value chart on the BSE with a trades of 14.57 million shares. It is followed by Cals Refineries (14.18 million), Mahindra Satyam (11.26 million), Unitech (7.32 million) and Spicejet (6.89 million).
