"Many people ask as to what is the point in spending so much on space research. If we go back to when space research started, it has always been for the greater good of the people. Telemedicine, tele-education and telecommunication."
"The Oceansat is a very important project for us. Our fishermen are very much dependent on it. How would you feel if your mobile is taken away. You wouldn't know what to do, right? That is how the Oceansat is for the fishermen. With it they know exactly where to go."
What is the next big thing for ISRO?
"Earlier, we used to have one launch every two to three years. Now we are having multiple projects every year. Building on that is the way forward for us."
One interesting thing you said in your presentation is how there is healthy interaction between juniors and seniors and how the seniors mentor the youngsters. Is that also Sarabhai legacy. He used to cover up for juniors (including Dr APJ Abdul Kalam) when they goofed up and let them take the centre stage when they succeeded.
"Very much. It is the same now and subsequent generations have also developed and left their imprints and taken it further. Basically it is the boss who stands up and takes the responsibility."
