'It is very hard to replace Bill Gates'

January 22, 2009

Do you feel the need to mould the raw talent you get?

We do feel the need to train them for at least five weeks. The reason we do this is that they need to know the process needed to build a product of this scale. That is a huge learning. We have to change their thinking process because they are developing product for a huge market.

Do developers have to be innovative?

Absolutely. One of the most important things we look for when we hire them is whether they have the ability to innovate. They have to think out of the box. We ask them what they are familiar with and then what they are not familiar with. We do this because every person in Microsoft has ownership, and it could be a small feature or a big product.
