'The bureaucracy is doing the greatest damage to the country'

May 06, 2008

You told us once that if agriculture goes wrong, nothing else will go right...

The Naxalite movements etc start from there. 2,000 years ago, the Roman philosopher Seneca said a hungry person listens not to reason, nor cares for justice, nor is he bent by any prayer.

Do you feel the economist prime minister and his team have failed?

This prime minister has been there for only four years...

But he was the one who liberalised the economy.

He did a good thing by de-controlling but I wish the bureaucracy as a whole could be dismantled; they are the ones who are doing the greatest damage to the country putting so many shackles and unnecessary file work.

Also, they who have no knowledge even control the technical departments.

Manmohan Singh and (P V ) Narasimha Rao started dismantling the disincentives which came in the way of creativity and innovation in entrepreneurship. I think that was a significant development.

In a federal country like ours, agriculture is largely a state subject. The Government of India has given so much money to the states but what have they done?
