The story of two bulls
February 4, 2008
The Wall Street Bull, or the Charging Bull, was sculpted by Arturo Di Modica, an Italian-American sculptor. The creation remains one of the most photographed statues in New York.
Modica had made the statue soon after the 1987 crash of the US markets. He had the New York bull quietly trucked to the doorstep of the New York Stock Exchange, as a sort of a Christmas present. This led to police impounding the sculpture.
But no sooner was this done than a huge public uproar went up. Bowing to people's wishes, the NYC officials then decided to shift the statue a couple of blocks south of the NYSE in downtown Manhattan to the nearby Bowling Green Park.
Fifteen years after Modica sculpted the world famous statue, he decided to sell it in 2004 on the condition that it should not be removed from its current location. No one has yet shown interest in owning the Charging Bull.
