New luxury train to cost Rs 25 lakh per trip!

August 28, 2008

The tariff is set at $2,000 for super deluxe rooms per suite per person, $1,200 for a deluxe saloon single supplement, $800 for twin sharing of deluxe saloon plus taxes, much higher than what it costs to travel on the Palace on Wheels, India's first luxury train where the tariff began at $400.

"Though it has not been finalised yet, it is expected to be Rs 25 lakh per trip (which runs into several days)," said a senior RTDC official and added "Palace on Wheels is being run on revenue sharing basis with railways."

While Railways get 56 per cent of revenue, Rajasthan's share is 44 per cent in Palace on Wheels.

The Railways are confident of generating a cash surplus of Rs 31,000 crore by the end of 2008-09, up from Rs 25,000 crore in 2007-08. There are no signs of a slowdown in Lalu Prasad's world.
