Singur farmers don't want Tatas to leave

August 23, 2008

Besides Patnaik, many people in the industrial sector are aware that violence at Kalinga Nagar, where 14 tribals were gunned down on January 2, 2006 during land acquisation for industries, was a major hurdle to industrialisation.

"After Kalinga Nagar violence, police had been asked to maintain restraint in industry-related violence", a senior police officer said adding the police were asked not to act tough while dealing with displacement issue.

This could be a major reason for why the government is still unable to acquire 4,004 acres of land near Paradip for South Korean steel major POSCO's project, sources said.
