India's 10 cities with highest household incomes

August 11, 2008

1. Surat (Rs 457,671)

Surat households are the most prosperous in India, says a study jointly conducted by the National Council of Applied Economic Research's Rajesh Shukla and Future Capital Research's Roopa Purushothaman.

After adjusting for cost of living differences, the average annual household income in the city stands at Rs 4.57 lakh. Surat's average annual household income is twice as much as the national per capita income and almost equal to China's per capita income.

Surat is also India's fastest growing city with an annualised GDP growth rate of 11.5 per cent over the past seven years.

The diamond city displaced Chandigarh from the top spot in a list of 20 cities because of its higher income and lower cost of living.

Surat's middle class has more than doubled between 2004-5 and 2007-8, while the low-income category has shrunk by over a third.
