August 6, 2008

Amongst Indian politicians, Mayawati is the highest taxpayer. She also ranks 20th among India's highest taxpayers.

The Economic Times said that in 2007-08, the Uttar Pradesh chief minister paid Rs 26.26 crore (Rs 262.6 million) in income tax.

Mayawati had shelled out around Rs 15 crore (Rs 150 million) in advance tax in April-December, 2007. Mayawati's income is estimated to be around Rs 80 crore (Rs 800 million).

The Economic Times reported that India's highest taxpayer, a resident of Delhi, paid Rs 121 crore as income tax. The newspaper said that the income tax authorities had requested that the names of these high taxpayers, who are not celebrities, be kept a secret so as to keep extortionists at bay.
