Singhania then met Union Minister for Human Resource Development Arjun Singh and justified the fee hike, adding they would take steps to ensure that all deserving students get into the prestigious institution.
The renowned aviator and Chairman Emeritus of the Raymond group is no stranger to IIM-A, having been on the board of governors of the institute for five years - from 1994 to 1999.
Singhania was also appointed chairman IIM-A for a five-year term last March. He replaced NR Narayana Murthy, chairman and chief mentor, Infosys Technologies, whose term expired on March 10, 2007. Earlier, he was also sheriff of Mumbai.
Singhania is also a media-savvy person, having been the publisher of the shortlived Mumbai newspaper The Indian Post. His experience with the paper is perhaps the reason why 'autonomy' is one of his favourite subjects.
