Sensex hits 12,000-mark, ends at 11,973

The markets ended firm for the third straight session. The bulls outstripped the bears again.

Finally, the Sensex touched 12,000 mark for the first time since May 18 in late trade but could not sustain it. It rose 79.23 points or 0.67% to end at 11,973.02, which is the highest closing since May 17. The Sensex hit the 12,000-mark for the first time on April 20.

The Sensex journey: From 1,000 to 12,000!

The Nifty was up 17.05 points or 0.49% at 3,471.60. The CNX Midcap ended up 0.54% or 24.1 points at 4,520.75.
The market breadth was negative, about 1106 shares advanced, 1352 shares declined, and 63 shares remained unchanged.

ICICI Bank, Grasim, Bajaj Auto, Guj Ambuja Cem, TCS, SAIL, Zee and Oriental Bank were the top gainers on the bourses.

However, Hero Honda, HDFC, HDFC Bank, Reliance Energy, Bharti Airtel and GSK Pharma were the biggest losers.

The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 8,412.32 crore (Rs 84.12 billion), BSE cash turnover at Rs 4,053.43 crore (Rs 40.53 billion) and the total turnover at Rs 33,760.82 crore (Rs 337.60 billion).

The BSE Bankex was the major gainer among the indices. It finished at 5,635.97, up 1.59% as the banking stocks like IOB, Federal Bank, Allahabad Bank, Bank of India and ICICI Bank gained.

Metal stocks including Jindal Stainless, SAIL, Jindal Steel, Sterlite Ind and Hind Zinc also surged. The BSE Metal Index closed up 1.04% at 8,314.41.

Pharma stocks like Glenmark, FDC, Cadila Health, Dr Reddy's Labs and Nicholas Piramal made smart gains today. The BSE Healthcare Index gained 0.51% to end at 3,601.49.

The BSE IT Index was up 0.86% at 4,348.01, wherein the technology stocks like Hexaware Tech, TCS, Infosys, Satyam and Wipro moved up.

The BSE FMCG Index closed at 2,004.67, up 0.63% as buying was seen in McDowell, HLL, Tata Tea, Britannia and P&G.

Oil stocks like IOC, BPCL, Reliance, Petronet LNG and Chennai Petro also spurted up.

The BSE Oil & Gas Index was up 0.50% at 5,675.23.

Cement stocks like ACC, Amb Cem East, Birla Corp, Guj Ambuja Cem, India Cements and Madras Cements, Shree Cement and UltraTech Cement have also gained.

The BSE Capital Goods and Auto indices ended marginally higher. However, the BSE Consumer Durables Index lost 0.89% at 3,083.88.

Sensex @ 1508 hrs

The markets are trading higher levels on the back of heavy buying interest in sector like bank, metal and IT.

At 15.08 pm, the Sensex is up 90.50 points or 0.76% at 11,984.29, and the Nifty up 14.45 points or 0.42% at 3,469.

About 1151 shares have advanced, 1281 shares declined, and 75 shares are unchanged.

Among the BSE sectoral indices onlt consumer durable index was down 0.59%.

The BSE bankand metal indices were trading over 1%. 

ICICI Bank, Dr Reddys Labs, Grasim and Guj Ambuja Cem were top gainer on the Sensex.
SAIL, ICICI Bank, Zee Tele and Grasim were top gainers on the Nifty.

Index heavyweight Hindustan Lever was trading at Rs 238.70 up 1.29% from its previous close of Rs 235.65.

Index heavyweight Reliance was trading at Rs 1,131.90 up 1.39% from its previous close of Rs 1,116.35.

Tech major Infosys was trading at Rs 1,832.00 up 1.22% from its previous close of Rs 1,810.

Among metal pack, Jindal Stainless was quoting at Rs 102.70, up Rs 3.30, or 3.32% and SAIL was quoting at Rs 76, up Rs 2.45, or 3.33%.

Sensex hits the 12,000-mark

The markets were range bound at higher levels. At 2:27 pm, the Sensex was up 107 points at 12,000. It has hit 12,000 for the first time since May 18. The Nifty was up 24 points at 3,478.

The market breadth was mixed, about 1147 shares have advanced, 1235 shares declined, and 97 shares are unchanged.

Top gainers were Dr Reddy's Labs (3.62%), Grasim (2.92%), ICICI Bank (2.16%), Satyam (1.87%), Oriental Bank (2.30%) and Zee (2.12%).

Hero Honda (-1.95%), NTPC (-1.55%), HDFC (-1.27%), Reliance Comm (-1.20%) and Tata Power (-1.24%) were the top losers.

The BSE IT, Bankex, FMCG, Healthcare and Oil indices have gained sharply.

Tata Power will bid for South Africa project by September-end. The company is looking at building 380 MW power plant in South Africa.

Sensex @ 1314 hrs

The markets were witnessing buying interest. At 1:14 pm, the Sensex was up 52 points at 11946. The Nifty was up 11 points at 3466.

The cement stocks like Gujarat Ambuja Cements, ACC, India Cements, Mysore Cement, Prism Cement, JK Cement, Shree Cement, UltraTech Cement and Madras Cements were gained.

Top gainers were Dr Reddy's Labs (3.34%), Grasim (3%), Guj Ambuja Cem (1.59%), Satyam (1.68%), ACC (1.60%), Oriental Bank (2.07%) and Zee (1.99%).

However, Hero Honda (-2.40%), Reliance Comm (-1.77%), HDFC (-0.91%), HDFC Bank (-0.66%) and GSK Pharma (-1.33%) were the top losers.

The BSE Bankex, Healthcare, IT and oil indices were up over 0.70% each.  Satyam has bid for more orders from Telstra and it has planned additional IT development centre in China and Malaysia and also planned acquisition in Japan.

The company may set up facility in Vietnam after 12 months. The share price was up 1.46% at 814.50.

Sensex @ 1213 hrs

The markets continue to trade in green on the back of buying interest in scrips across sectors.

At 12.13 pm IST, the Sensex is up 43.17 points or 0.36% at 11,936.96, and the Nifty up 17.10 points or 0.49% at 3,471.65.

About 1057 shares have advanced, 1202 shares declined, and 92 shares are unchanged.  All BSE sectoral indices were trading in green.

BSE IT and bank index were up 0.76% and 0.75% respectively.

Dr Reddys Labs, Grasim, Satyam, Guj Ambuja Cem and Zee Tele were top gainers on the indices.

However, Reliance Comm, Hero Honda, NTPC, HDFC Bank and GlaxoSmithKline were top losers on the indices.

Index heavyweight Reliance was trading at Rs 1,128 up 1.04% from its previous close of Rs 1,116.35.

BSE-200 gainers:
Indiabulls Financial Services was quoting at Rs 373.50, up Rs 27.50, or 7.95%.
Birla Corporation was quoting at Rs 314.20, up Rs 15.40, or 5.15%.
Indian Overseas Bank was quoting at Rs 102.70, up Rs 4.40, or 4.48%.
Allahabad Bank was quoting at Rs 79.20, up Rs 3.20, or 4.21%
UTI Bank was quoting at Rs 354.65, up Rs 15.20, or 4.48%.

Sensex @ 1117 hrs

The markets are trading firm. At 11:17 am, the Sensex was up 42 points at 11,936. The Nifty was up 14 points at 3,468.

The market breadth was positive, about 1249 shares have advanced, 780 shares declined, and 64 shares are unchanged.

Guj Ambuja Cem (1.81%), Satyam (1.78%), Ranbaxy Labs (1.56%), Grasim (1.44%), Oriental Bank (2.46%), Suzlon Energy (2.22%), Dabur India (2.12%) and Dr Reddy's Labs (1.78%) were the top gainers on the bourses.

However, NTPC (-1.55%), HDFC Bank (-1.09%), Hero Honda (-1.05%), Reliance Comm (-0.69%) and HDFC (-0.47%) were the losers.

All BSE indices were in green. The BSE Bankex and Healthcare Index were up over 1% each.

Allahabad Bank, IOB, UTI Bank, Oriental Bank, Canara Bank, Union Bank, ICICI Bank and Kotak Mahindra were the gainers in banking sector.

Pharma gainers were Glenmark, Apollo Hospital, Nicholas Piramal, Orchid Chemical, Aurobindo Pharma, Dr Reddy's Labs, Lupin and Ranbaxy Labs.

The BSE IT and Metal indices gained nearly 1% each. 1.09 crore shares of Essar Steel (2% stake) changed hands on the NSE at Rs 35.60 per share. The shares price rose to 3.69%, up Rs 1.30.

1.95 crore shares Satyam changed hands on the NSE in 3 deals at Rs 809 per share. The share price surged 1.94% at 818.35.

Sensex @ 0957 hrs

The markets have opened on positive note, as global cues were positive. At 9.57 am, the Sensex was up 94 points at 11988. The Nifty was up 23 points at 3478.

Wipro, Dr Reddy's, Hindalco, L&T, Satyam, Infosys, Dabur, Zee Tele, MTNL, OBC, Tata Motors, Reliance, Reliance Comm, Bharti Airtel, ITC, Ranbaxy and Cipla were the biggest gainers on the bourses in the morning trade.

Asian markets were trading higher; Nikkei was up 138 points.

FIIs were the net sellers of $25.9 million and MFs net buyers of Rs 112.47 crore (Rs 1.12 billion) in equity on September 12.

Wall Street ended higher as energy shares battered; the Dow Jones industrial average gained 45.23 points, or 0.39%, to end at 11,543.32.

US crude oil for October delivery rose 21 cents to settle at $63.97 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
