The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay has decided to set up a 'satellite campus' in Goa.

The director of technical education, Goa government, Dr J Chandrasekhar toldĀ Business Standard that the IIT Bombay, is eager to set up a satellite campus at the Goa College of Engineering, Farmagudi, about 25-km from Panaji.

"If this satellite campus is set up, it would be first of its kind in the country. IIT, Bombay, has already established such campuses in South-East Asia, in places like Singapore," he said.

Chandrasekhar pointed out that IIT, Bombay, has been involved in improving quality of education at the Goa College of Engineering since 2001.

Dr Chandrasekhar said that the satellite campus would result in exchange of faculties and further exchange of students, albeit in a limited way. "The students would be able to visit the IIT, Mumbai during summertime to complete their projects," he said.

He said that the satellite campus of IIT Bombay, if set up at the Goa College of Engineering, would prove to be beneficial to Goan students, perhaps more beneficial than the BITS-Pilani campus, which is already established at Zuarinagar, Vasco.
