Car sales zoom 25% in June

Driven by the top three carmakers -- Maruti, Hyundai and Tata Motors -- the car sales surged by 25 per cent in June 2004 over the same month last year.

A total of 65,046 units were sold in the review month over 52,060 units in June 2003, data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers showed.

Commercial vehicle sales, an indicator of economic growth, went up by 30 per cent at 23,650 units over 18,186 units in June last year.

Two-wheeler sales in India, the second-biggest market after China, grew by 14.6 per cent at 470,000 units as sales of motorcycles and step-throughs jumped 12.8 per cent at 365,000 units.

A resurgent scooter market posted a rise of an impressive 12.1 per cent at 77,144 units while moped sales moved northward by clocking a rise of 2.30 per cent at 27,339 units.
